CONTROLLING WATER WEIGHT

If you’ve dropped or gained weight too quickly there’s a good chance water weight has something to do with that! Water weight is when fluid collects in your tissues which cause them to swell! This can give of a bloated appearance and can also add significant weight to the scales.

Here are two main reasons why your body would hold onto excessive water:

1) NOT DRINKING ENOUGH

The human body is very intelligent, it is also made up of a massive 60% WATER! So, if you fail to intake enough water your body will hold and store what it does have. If you give your body sufficient water regularly then the body excretes water as necessary. By not drinking enough water you are telling your body to hold and store water as it doesn’t know when it’s next water intake will be. Dry skin, fatigue and lack of focus are also other symptoms of dehydration. 2L per day is a general rule of thumb but this will also depend on weight and daily activity levels. NOTE: Thirst isn’t a good indicator of hydration. In fact, by the time you’re thirsty, your body is already significantly dehydrated!

2) TOO MUCH SALT IN YOUR DIET

A salty diet can result in excessive water retention. Sodium (salty foods) binds with water and keeps it trapped in the body. The higher the sodium content in someones diet, the more fluid retention.

It’s important to note that there are other reasons why the body would hold onto water such as; pregnancy, cortisol levels and carbohydrate intake however the two listed above are your key players!
